“Women’s employment, gender equality & development strategy”- Working paper by Maria Karamessini

The ENA Institute for Alternative Policies has published the working paper of the Director of the Gender Studies Laboratory, Professor Maria Karamessini, entitled: “Women’s employment, gender equality & development strategy”.

The main points of the text are that:

  1. The elimination of gender inequalities in the labor market is a major social & political challenge for Greece
  2. Gender equality in employment can be a tool of the growth strategy, contributing to the increase of the workforce and productivity & addressing the adverse effects of demographic ageing on the insurance system.

Gender equality in employment is a major social and political challenge in our country, due to the very large gender inequalities in the labor market compared to the rest of the EU countries. The success of the bet depends to a large extent on the political choices concerning the country’s development model, so gender equality policy should extend its scope of intervention in the field of development policy.

On the other hand, the country’s development strategy and policy must take seriously into account that increasing the female employment rate and reducing gender inequalities in the labor market can contribute significantly or decisively to achieving key development goals: increasing productivity, addressing labor shortages and the financial sustainability of the insurance system; threatened by demographic ageing.

Large-scale social investments in the “care economy” are an integral element of a progressive development strategy with a strong social impact, which contributes to and benefits from the promotion of female employment and gender equality.
